The IELTS Scholarship you need to know about for Canada

If you have your sights set on studying in Canada, you might be looking around for scholarship opportunities to bring down your costs while you are living abroad. This post will give you all the information you need on a fantastic opportunity for a scholarship!

If you are looking for a scholarship to study in Canada after taking the IELTS, you can apply for the Global Study Award scholarships. It is open to any applicant age 18 or over that is looking to pursue a full-time undergraduate or graduate degree abroad in any country in the world.

This post will go into further application requirements and the process for applying for the scholarship, as well as some information on IELTS Prize, another smaller scholarship that is available for applicants from certain countries.

The Global Study Awards IELTS scholarship

In 2015, the British Council, in collaboration with StudyPortals and the International Student Identity Card Association, started the Global Study Awards IELTS scholarship program, aimed at giving financial aid in the form of scholarships to two IELTS test-takers per year so that they can pursue their undergraduate or graduate studies abroad.

The award is available to anybody over the age of 18 and would like to pursue their degree outside of their country of origin. In addition, to be eligible, the selection committee asks that candidates show that they have the potential to contribute positively to society through their studies; a strong commitment to career growth; and a sincere interest in increasing understanding among different cultures.

There is no minimum score required in order to be eligible for one of the Global Study Awards scholarships. The selection committee is focused on how you have contributed to society in a positive way, as well as how motivated you are to study abroad and increase intercultural understanding.

The prize is valued at a maximum of £10,000 per person. If you win the scholarship, you will not be given the scholarship money directly, but it will be given to the institution you will study at in order to cover all or part of your fees. If there is any money left over after paying your tuition, the scholarship may be used to cover living expenses of up to 52 weeks. The excess money can be used for any expenses incurred after first registering at the institution.

Application requirements for the Global Study Awards IELTS scholarship

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • As stated above, you need to be at least 18 years old on January 1st of the year of application
  • You need to take an IELTS test at an official British Council center, and received a test report form (TRF), the official score report of the British Council. If you took the IELTS before this year, check the requirements on the StudyPortals website
  • You must have a valid International Student Identity Card (ISIC) or an International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) when applying
  • You need to have an acceptance letter from your institution of choice by the deadline, and plans to enrol in a full-time undergraduate or graduate degree program abroad
  • You are not eligible for the scholarship if you plan to study at a university in your home country
  • You will need to write a review of your experience of choosing your university of choice on StudyPortals.com
  • If you were to win the scholarship, you also need to be available to speak with the British Council, StudyPortals and the International Student Identity Card Association about your experience, which may be used for promotional purposes. Although that’s not a bad tradeoff for a £10,000 prize!

If you meet the requirements, that is fantastic news! If you would like to apply for the scholarship, you may do so here.

What score do you need to get on the IELTS to be eligible for the Global Study Awards?

There is no minimum score required in order to be eligible for one of the Global Study Awards scholarships. The selection committee is focused on how you have contributed to society in a positive way, as well as how motivated you are to study abroad and increase intercultural understanding.

Is Global Study Awards scholarship available for takers of any of the IELTS tests?

Whether you have taken the IELTS General or the IELTS Academic, you are eligible. The IELTS Life Skills test doesn’t make you eligible for the scholarship, however, if you took IELTS for UKVI purposes, you do qualify.

If you took your IELTS test online, you typically wouldn’t be eligible for the scholarship, as one of the requirements is that you take the test in an official British Council center. That being said, if testing was not available in an official center when you took the test, you can contact the StudyPortals team via the chat function in the upper right-hand corner of their website, and ask them if you can still apply.

How do I get an ISIC card?

The International Student Identity Card is a requirement for the scholarship, as it certifies that you are enrolled as a full-time student. In addition to being a requirement, it can be beneficial in helping you get access to student discounts you otherwise wouldn’t have without it!

You can apply for the ISIC card here.

Are there any other scholarships available for Canada?

You may find that you do not qualify or you would like to explore other options for scholarships. In past years, the British Council offered the IELTS Prize to applicants from several countries around the world. For example, in the 2019/20 year, they awarded six £3000 scholarships to successful candidates from India, Pakistan, UAE, Nigeria, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

Good luck!
